Addison was an Englishman who spent the Second World War in the 23d Hussars, participating for example in “Operation Market Garden” (the “Bridge Too Far” campaign as it became known). After the war he found work in the movie industry, beginning with the dance orchestration in Brighton Rock (... More information1947). His big career breakthrough was scoring Tom Jones, the 1963 movie directed by Tony Richardson, with a screenplay by Tom Osborne. The movie proved very successful. It won four Oscars, one of them for Addison’s music.
Many people associate Addison with his one collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock, Torn Curtain (1966). Hitchcock had had a falling out with composer Bernard Hermann during production – Hermann couldn’t or wouldn’t produce the upbeat, jazzy, sound that Hitchcock and his studio wanted for this picture – so they turned to Addison to pinch hit.
In 1977, for director Richard Attenborough, old-soldier Addison actually composed the music for the Second World War movie “A Bridge Too Far.”
