Charles Wuorinen, a prolific Pulitzer-Prize winning composer, began writing music at five and taking lessons by six. At sixteen he received the New York Philharmonic’s Young Composers’ award. By the 1960s, along with Harvey Sollberger, Wuorinen formed The Group for Contemporary Music. The Group championed the work of Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, and Stefan Wolpe. Wuorinen has composed more than 260 works for orchestra, chamber music, solo instrumentals and voice. Although some of his compositions are simple, he is known as a complex composer of the late twentieth and early twentieth first centuries. The Judeo-Christian continuum is integral to Wuorinen’s view of the world, as is his reading of literature. Inspired by Salman Rushdie, he produced the opera “Haroun and the Sea of Stories”; inspired by Annie Proulx, the ballet “Brokeback Mountain.”Less information
